Proto IRE Grading Rubric/Conventions 
This is the rubric that will be used for grading the Proto-IRE. Marking Conventions: WM = Writing Mechanics (includes spelling, grammar, and other mechanical infelicities) CL = Clarity (includes imprecisions and ambiguities in writing that mitigate the clarity/perspicuity of your piece) **Problems with mechanics and clarity will affect scores for each of the components to the extent they are present therein**

• (SO): objection largely unpersuasive
Acceptable

• (RO): objection is “in the
neighborhood” of author’s position

• (SO): objection not without some merit, but still lacking in important ways
Good

• (RO): objection strikes “near the center” of author’s position

• (SO): objection strong, though lacking in minor ways
Exemplary

• (RO): objection is “spot on;” strikes at heart of author’s position

• (SO): objection perceptive, persuasive, and powerful
